Kenya assumes the NCTTCA Policy Organs Chairmanship for the period 2019-2021

Summary/Brief
Hon. James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Republic of Kenya; who took over office as the Chairperson of the NCTTCA Council of Ministers for the next two year (2019-2021) from Hon. John Luk Jok, Minister of Transport, Republic of South Sudan; reiterated the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Kenya to work together with all the Northern Corridor Member States, and continue joint effort to support the Northern Corridor Secretariat to implement programs aimed at achieving all the objectives in the Northern Corridor Treaty.


During the 31st Meeting of the Council of Ministers and the 47th Executive Committee meeting of the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA) held from 22nd to 26th July 2019, at Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort in Mombasa, Kenya; under the theme: “Leveraging Trade Opportunities for Regional Integration”, the Republic of South Sudan officially handed over the rotational Chairmanship of the Northern Corridor Policy Organs to the Republic of Kenya.

James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Republic of Kenya.

Hon. James Macharia, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, and Urban Development, Republic of Kenya; who took over office as the Chairperson of the NCTTCA Council of Ministers for the next two year (2019-2021) from Hon. John Luk Jok, Minister of Transport, Republic of South Sudan; reiterated the commitment of the Government of the Republic of Kenya to work together with all the Northern Corridor Member States, and continue joint effort to support the Northern Corridor Secretariat to implement programs aimed at achieving all the objectives in the Northern Corridor Treaty.

As the Republic of Kenya take over the Chairmanship of the Northern Corridor Council of Ministers, I would like to assure you of the unwavering support,” said CS James Macharia. “Our joint effort in a spirit of frank cooperation and  complementarity will guarantee a collective success in attaining the Northern Corridor we want”, he added.

The Outgoing Chairman of the NCTTCA Executive Committee, Capt. David Martin Hassan, Under Secretary, Ministry of Transport, Republic of South Sudan; handing over of power to the current Chairperson, Hon. Esther Koimett, Principal Secretary, State Department of Transport, Republic of Kenya.

The full bureau was reconstituted where the Republic of Kenya assumed the Chairmanship; Vice-Chair went to Republic of Rwanda; while the Republic of Uganda and the Republic of Burundi took over as the 1st and 2nd Rapporteurs respectively; the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of South Sudan became members.

In attendance of the 31st Council of Ministers meeting were the African Union (AU) Special Envoy and High Representative on Infrastructure Development; Rt. Hon. Raila A. Odinga and his delegation; Representatives of Regional Institutions and Development Partners including European Union (EU), New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Port Management of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA), and Inter-Governmental Standing Committee on Shipping (ISCOS).

Hon. James Macharia congratulated the Council for the successful deliberations and coming up with key resolutions during the 31st Meeting of the Northern Corridor Council of Ministers.  He further commended the outgoing Chairmanship of the Republic of South Sudan for the achievements during the last two years.
