Kenya Hosts Groundbreaking Eco-Driving and Smart Freight Transport Managers Training to Promote Safer Roads and a Greener Northern Corridor

Nairobi, Kenya, 7th–10th April 2025 – The Government of Kenya, in collaboration with the Northern Corridor Transit and Transport Coordination Authority (NCTTCA), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), FIA Foundation, Smart Freight Centre, NTSA, and other partners, successfully conducted a transformative training program aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing transport emissions along the Northern Corridor.

The initiative included two key training programs:

  1. Smart Freight Transport Managers Training: Held on 7th April 2025 at the Panari Hotel in Nairobi, this session trained 30 managers on energy-efficient technologies, logistics optimization, and emissions tracking.
  2. Smart Freight Transport Managers Training at Panari Hotel

The Eco-Driving and Smart Freight Transport Managers Training brought together fleet managers, truck drivers, and regulatory agencies to address the dual challenges of road safety and environmental sustainability. The program is part of the broader Northern Corridor Green Freight Strategy 2030, which aims to reduce carbon emissions, enhance fuel efficiency, and build climate-resilient transport systems.

“Through this training, we are equipping drivers and managers with tools to optimize routes, lower fuel use, and ultimately reduce emissions,” said Dr. John Deng Diar Diing, Executive Secretary of NCTTCA.

“We aim to reduce corridor CO₂ emissions intensity by 10% by 2030, improve air quality, and pave the way for zero emissions by 2050,” he added.

The training covered essential modules, including:

  • Energy-efficient driving practices

  • Freight operations optimization

  • Emissions monitoring and reporting

  • Occupational safety and health

  • Customer service skills

Aligned with the region’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), including Kenya’s commitment to a 32% emissions reduction by 2030, the training reinforces regional efforts to meet climate goals, enhance public health, and foster sustainable trade.

Partners supporting this initiative included UNEP, FIA Foundation, Smart Freight Centre, NTSA, Diamonds Defensive Driving School, and the Kenya Transporters Association.

This milestone training marks a significant step in empowering transport sector stakeholders to embrace safer and greener practices, ensuring that the Northern Corridor remains a vital and sustainable trade artery for the region.
